IRIS: End of time for registration of freelancers

The informal deadline of the Ministry of National Economy and Finance for the registration of independent professionals at IRIS in order to accept payments from their clients.

From October 1, the tax control mechanism will start cross-checking and professionals and self-employed who are found not to have IRIS will face the imposition of a fine of 1,500 euros.

The IRIS Service

More than 530,000 freelancers and sole proprietorships have already registered for the service with data showing an explosion of IRIS use in 2024 as 1 in 2 citizens -that is more than 3 million- with activated web banking have now linked their accounts to this direct payment system.

At the same time, thetransactions carried out through the IRIS system within 2024 reached 34 million and reached a value of 3.7 billion euros, showing an increase of 150% and 116% respectively compared to the same period last year.

Citizens who sign up for the service benefit from absolutely free transactions, (whether between citizens or for payments to professionals), easy, fast and secure payment, without IBAN, without card and without cash, just by using their mobile phone.

It is noted that the limit of 500 euros per day for transactions through IRIS is applied per customer and not to the total amount of payments that the professional can receive within 24 hours. For example, a professional can receive in one day 4 payments of 500 euros each (a total of 2,000 euros).

Payments through IRIS

Payments via IRIS can be made from the customer’s mobile phone, by scanning a QR code, or via RF payment codes (quite a common method in electricity, telephone, utility bills, etc.) or through the IRIS e-commerce service, if it is about online stores.

Activation of the customer’s Internet or mobile banking is necessary for payment through IRIS.

Already the payment service between individuals, mainly via mobile, has gained ground, as since the beginning of the year, transactions offering direct debit to the bank account, at no cost, have almost doubled.

In the case of payments to businesses, the number of transactions, on an annual basis, has more than tenfold, while through online stores it has doubled.
