The planning of two major projects of national scope of the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Information was approved today, with a total budget of about € 400 million. euro. The aim of the two major projects is to develop a national network of new generation broadband access in urban, island, mountainous and disadvantaged areas for networks up to 1Gbps.

Target - networks speed up to 1Gbps

Σύμφωνα με τη σχετική ανακοίνωση, κατόπιν έγκρισης από την Επιτροπή Παρακολούθησης του Επιχειρησιακού Προγράμματος "Ανταγωνιστικότητα, Επιχειρηματικότητα και Καινοτομία 2014-2020" (ΕΠΑνΕΚ), προχωρά η χρηματοδότηση μέσω του ΕΣΠΑ 2014-2020, so that, by 2020, the 70% of the population of urban areas have access to infrastructure – speed networks up to 1Gbps (at least 100 Mbps upgradable to 1 Gbps) as well as the majority of the population of the region, and in particular of semi-urban-rural areas, to have, through the development of an extensive fibre optic network, broadband connections of at least 30 Mbps and preferably 500 Mbps.

On the occasion of the approval of the "Superfast Broadband", "Rural Extension" projects, the Minister of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Information, Nikos Pappas, stated:

«Στόχος μας είναι η ουσιαστική αξιοποίηση των υποδομών οπτικών ινών προς όφελος του πολίτη και της επιχειρηματικότητας. Στοχεύουμε, επίσης, στη συνολική αναβάθμιση της διεθνούς θέσης της χώρας στους τομείς των υποδομών, των τηλεπικοινωνιών και της συνδεσιμότητας, που είναι κρίσιμοι για τη μετάβαση στην ψηφιακή οικονομία και κοινωνία. Έχουμε δεσμευθεί να ανατρέψουμε τη σημερινή εικόνα. Σήμερα, η διεθνής θέση της χώρας ως προς τις υποδομές συνδεσιμότητας και τη διαθεσιμότητα πρόσβασης στο διαδίκτυο για το σύνολο του πληθυσμού παρουσιάζει σημαντική υστέρηση σε σχέση με τον κοινοτικό μέσο όρο, παρότι αποτελεί βασική προϋπόθεση του κεντρικού στόχου της Ε.Ε. για την ψηφιακή οικονομία και κοινωνία».

Αρμόδια για το σχεδιασμό των παρεμβάσεων είναι η Γενικής Γραμματεία Τηλεπικοινωνιών και Ταχυδρομείων του Υπουργείου Ψηφιακής Πολιτικής, Τηλεπικοινωνιών και Ενημέρωσης. Ο επικεφαλής της, Βασίλης Μαγκλάρας, δήλωσε σχετικά:

"The projects are compatible with the National Next Generation Broadband Access Plan (NGA Plan), approved by the EU. The process for the development of the most modern technological infrastructure that the country needs has already begun. The aim is to implement the transition to the digital economy and to shape a new competitive development paradigm."

The "Superfast Broadband" and "Rural Extension" projects will proceed through the development of an extensive fiber optic network. It will ensure an internet connection at very high speeds. Practical public intervention (subsidy) is also foreseen to stimulate the demand for next generation telecommunications services, if required. The two projects are expected to mobilise significant additional private investment, significantly increasing the final intervention budget.
