Share

The French Tech Athens community is part of the French Tech network. The announcement was made by Jean-Noël Barrot, French Deputy Minister in charge of digital switchover and telecommunications.

As stated in the relevant announcement of the French Embassy in Athens, this is the happy conclusion of many months of collective work. The aim is to connect the actors of the Greek-French start-up ecosystem who wish to participate in a structure that will unite local innovation actors.

The French Tech Athens community will include:

  • startups
  • entrepreneurs
  • innovative businesses
  • investors who contribute to the development of the local ecosystem and the advancement of digital business

Under the leadership of its president, the community will support the synergies between the technology ecosystems of Greece and France. It will act as a gateway for French startups that want to operate internationally through the Greek market.

Opportunities in Greece

The creation of the French Tech community in Athens comes at a time of rapid development of the technological ecosystem in Greece. The industry is estimated to have a market capitalization of €8 billion in 2022. In 2012 it was still at zero. The country's attractiveness is clearly highlighted by the emergence of the first Greek "unicorns", as well as by the investments of large multinationals in cloud and telecoms, or even the acquisition of 49% of Viva Wallet by JP Morgan. The birth of the French Tech Athens community is part of this context and also embodies France's ambition to become one of the leading digital countries on a global scale.

At a time when the technology sector in Greece is benefiting from the strong support of the public authorities, the French Ambassador to Greece, Patrick Maisonnave, thanked Mission French Tech, the group responsible for supporting the French start-up ecosystem, for approving the candidacy of the French Tech Athens community. The Ambassador also underlined the unwavering will of the entrepreneurs, as well as the continuous support of the services of the Embassy of France in Greece, who have worked for two years to establish this community, which is young, dynamic and ready to grow.
