Sofia Zacharaki, Deputy Minister of State for Tourism, responsible for Tourism Education at the Tourism IEKs

"At the Ministry of Tourism we attribute a leading role to tourism vocational training, as we firmly believe that the qualitative upgrade of the Greek tourism experience passes through the high professionalism of the people of Greek tourism. With targeted actions, we put at the core of our initiatives the qualitative upgrade of public IVT Tourism, based on the real needs of the labor market and giving our students the necessary skills they need for multiple opportunities and quality jobs in the tourism industry. And we don't stop there. We are expanding the curriculum with two new experimental specialties, with an emphasis on educational and professional innovation. We issue a new, modern regulation of operation of our IVT and accelerate the procedures for the registration of new students, earlier than any other year. We have modernized, after eleven years, the internship of the students of the ministry's schools, while faithful to the commitment of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, we are granting for the first time - since this academic year - a housing allowance to the students of all our IVT. At the same time, we are launching the establishment of the first public Tourism Academy, as part of the collective effort we are making for the overall reform of tourism education. Because, tourism is a key pillar of support for the national economy. And upgrading our tourism education means further upgrading and enhancing the competitiveness of our own tourism product."
