Aquaculture Subsidies In recent years, aquaculture subsidies have been steadily increasing to boost production and competitiveness in the sector. Fish and shellfish farming, as well as the cultivation of aquatic plants, is one of the fastest-growing food sectors, already supplying half the world's fish consumption. In Europe, aquaculture accounts for nearly 20% of fish production and directly employs approximately 85,000 people. The sector consists mainly of small, medium and micro enterprises based in coastal and rural areas. The EU aquaculture sector is renowned for its high quality, sustainability and consumer protection standards. See espa.io for detailed information on all subsidy programmes for the aquaculture sector.
