VAT: In the “target” of zero declarations – What the control mechanism is looking for in businesses and freelancers
Professionals and businesses with zero VAT returns come under the “eye” of the tax office.
In the next period of time, the Independent Public Revenue Authority (AADE) will start extensive checks on the data captured on the platform myDATA with the aim of identifying “problematic” statements.
The initial planning of the AADE for this year provided for the performance of 4,000 checks on tax refunds. And €6.5 billion refunds to natural and legal entities.
Checks on VAT returns
The audit will concern the data included in the e-books for the year 2022 which will be cross-referenced based on the VAT returns submitted by the liable parties for that year.
In the event that the intersections detect large discrepancies, a regular check will be carried out by the AADE mechanism and both the revenues and expenses of the business-professional will be recalculated. In addition to the extra tax, offenders will be faced with the fines provided for by the legislation.
Corresponding crossings will be made for the years 2023 and 2024.
From 2025 onwards, the procedures will change as the VAT returns to be submitted by businesses and self-employed professionals are “locked” by the AADE and indeed without deviations.
The VAT declaration codes will be automatically pre-filled by AADE based on the data that will be posted on the myDATA platform and the taxpayers will not be able to intervene to modify the data, as the pre-filled declaration data will be locked. pre-filling and locking of return codes starts with VAT returns to extend in 2025 to income tax returns.
