“Gaia” tariff: Mandatory inclusion of all agricultural benefits from August 1, 2024
As the interest in the inclusion of the “Gaia” tariff for rural electricity is rather sluggish, the energy staff of the government has decided to make the transition of all farmers to the new special product.
The developments with the “Gaia” tariff
The special regulation is included in the amendment tabled in Parliament.
Since last May, when the approximately 190,000 owners of rural electricity connections could submit their applications for the “GAIA” tariff to the partner provider, only 12,500 farmers have initiated the process to secure favorable pricing for the electricity they consume.
The “Gaia” invoice
The contracts for the “Gaia” tariffs actually available to PPC (the majority of Greek farmers are its customers) are for ten years with a fixed fee.
For the first two years, the price is set at 9.3 cents per kilowatt hour for owners of rural electricity connections who belong to cooperative schemes or practice contract farming and have no overdue debts. Those who have outstanding debts, the price increases to 10.5 cents per kilowatt hour. For the rest of the holders of rural tariff connections, the kilowatt-hour prices are at 9.8 cents without overdue debts and at 11 cents for those with settled debts.
For the next 8 years a fixed charge of 9 cents per kilowatt hour is foreseen for 1/3 of the total electricity consumption. For the remaining 2/3 of the consumption, the owners of rural connections have no commitment and can freely choose as provider PPC or any other electricity supplier they wish. The fixed price of the “Gaia” tariff is 10 euros per month.
The beneficiaries
Gaia agricultural products are available in both low and medium voltage connections owned by professional farmers or producers participating in cooperative schemes. These include producer groups, organizations and associations, interprofessional organizations, agricultural or forced cooperatives, associations of forced cooperatives, anonymous partnership. Also, legal entities or individual companies practicing contract farming can secure the favorable pricing of “Gaia”.
The deadline for submitting applications ends on October 31. In the event that the farmer terminates the contract with the special agricultural tariff before its expiration, he will be charged with a withdrawal clause of 70 euros if he is a natural person or 700 euros if he is a legal person.
