Ioanna Sappho Pepelasi, Professor Emeritus at the Athens University of Economics and Business, presents and evaluates the data as <strong>\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u03c1\u03ac\u03c6\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/strong> \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/statistics\/performance-indicators\/regional-innovation-scoreboard_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Regional Innovation Scoreboard<\/a><\/strong> \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd <strong>\u03c0\u03bb\u03b1\u03c4\u03c6\u03cc\u03c1\u03bc\u03b1<\/strong> \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gsri.gov.gr\/protovoulies-draseis\/ethniko-mitroo-neofyon-epicheiriseon-elevate-greece\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elevate Greece<\/a><\/strong>. \u03a3\u03cd\u03bc\u03c6\u03c9\u03bd\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03b1\u03bd\u03ac\u03bb\u03c5\u03c3\u03b7 \u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03c9\u03bd \u03b4\u03b5\u03b4\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd, \u03c0\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9 \u03c4\u03bf \u03a0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf \u03a0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c6\u03b5\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03ce\u03bd \u03a0\u03bf\u03bb\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ce\u03bd, \u03b7 <strong>\u0395\u03bb\u03bb\u03ac\u03b4\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b1\u03be\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03af\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c9\u03c2 \u03bc\u03b5\u03c3\u03b1\u03af\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b5\u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03ad\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u03c4\u03cc\u03bc\u03b1 \u03c7\u03ce\u03c1\u03b1<\/strong> (Moderate Innovator). It is in the <strong>80.2% of the European Union<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, it is striking that, <strong>since 2014<\/strong>, the country has seen an <strong>impressive increase<\/strong>. An <strong>increase much higher<\/strong> than what was the case <strong>for the European Union average<\/strong>. <strong>Attica<\/strong> and <strong>Crete<\/strong> are the <strong>most<\/strong> <strong>innovative<\/strong> <strong>Greek<\/strong> <strong>regions<\/strong>. In contrast, the regions <strong>lag<\/strong> behind in <strong>innovation<\/strong> (they appear as Emerging rather than Moderate Innovators):<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ionian Islands<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>North and South Aegean<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Peloponnese<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Central Greece<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Western Macedonia<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eastern Macedonia-Thrace<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-&#x3B7;-&#x3B8;&#x3AD;&#x3C3;&#x3B7;-&#x3C4;&#x3B7;&#x3C2;-&#x3B5;&#x3BB;&#x3BB;&#x3AC;&#x3B4;&#x3B1;&#x3C2;-&#x3C3;&#x3C4;&#x3BF;&#x3BD;-&#x3BA;&#x3CC;&#x3C3;&#x3BC;&#x3BF;\"><strong>Greece&#8217;s place in the world<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>In 2022, <strong>in the international <a href=\"https:\/\/espa.io\/en\/business_type\/new-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">start-up<\/a> ecosystem<\/strong>, the top three (out of 100 countries) will consist of:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>the USA<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the United Kingdom<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Israel<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Greece is 48th in the world, 5th in the Balkans and 18th in Western Europe<\/strong>. The <strong>Greek<\/strong> <strong>startup ecosystem<\/strong> ranks 17th globally in <strong>social and leisure<\/strong>, 33rd in <strong>transport<\/strong> and <strong>34th<\/strong> in <strong>food tech.<\/strong> <strong>Finally<\/strong>, <strong>out of 1,000 cities<\/strong> (startup ecosystems) worldwide, <strong>Athens<\/strong> and <strong>Thessaloniki<\/strong> rank <strong>132nd<\/strong> and <strong>507th<\/strong> respectively. The top three internationally are <strong>San Francisco<\/strong>, <strong>New York<\/strong> and <strong>Beijing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Starting <strong>&#8220;almost from scratch&#8221; in 2010<\/strong>, it now has <strong>2,100-2,500 businesses<\/strong>. Cumulatively, from <strong>2010 to 2016<\/strong>, around <strong>80% of start-ups were based in Athens<\/strong>, with the periphery accounting for just under 7%. The rest corresponded to startups based outside Greece. In <strong>2021<\/strong>, the <strong>share<\/strong> of <strong>Athens-based firms had decreased to 51.7%<\/strong> and the share of the periphery had increased to about 30%.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Startups &#8211; \u0397 \u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c6\u03b5\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9\u03ce\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u03ba\u03bb\u03ac\u03b4\u03c9\u03bd<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>November 2022 data from Elevate Greece shows 664 registered companies<\/strong>. <strong>Attica<\/strong> is <strong>home to 68% of startups<\/strong> in Greece. <strong>Second<\/strong> in importance comes <strong>Central Macedonia with 14%<\/strong>, <strong>third<\/strong> <strong>Crete<\/strong> <strong>with 6%<\/strong> and <strong>fourth<\/strong> W<strong>estern Greece with 3%<\/strong> of all startups in the country. <strong>Fewer than 10 startups per region<\/strong> are recorded in <strong>Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Epirus, North Aegean, South Aegean, Western Macedonia, Ionian Islands and Peloponnese<\/strong>. The three most important sectors in terms of the number of registered startups are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/espa.io\/en\/c\/health-medication-social-welfare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">life sciences<\/a> (Med Tech, Health Tech, Bio Tech)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/espa.io\/en\/c\/enviornment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Environment<\/a> (Environment, Energy-Green Tech, Clean Tech)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Travel, Hospitality, Leisure<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In fact, <strong>these three sectors account for around 30% of the registered enterprises<\/strong> in the whole sample. \u038c\u03c3\u03bf \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/espa.io\/en\/c\/manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03bf\u03af\u03b7\u03c3\u03b7<\/a><\/strong>, \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03bf\u03c0\u03bf\u03af\u03b1 \u03bf\u03b9 \u03c7\u03ce\u03c1\u03b5\u03c2 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u0394\u03cd\u03c3\u03b7\u03c2 \u03b5\u03c0\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03c6\u03ad\u03c1\u03bf\u03c5\u03bd \u03c9\u03c2 \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03af\u03bf \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03b1\u03c4\u03b6\u03ad\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03c4\u03bf \u03bd\u03ad\u03bf \u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bf \u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae\u03c2 \u03b1\u03bd\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c5\u03be\u03b7\u03c2, \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u03c1\u03ac\u03c6\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf <strong>startup<\/strong> <strong>\u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/strong> <strong>\u03bc\u03cc\u03bd\u03bf 35 \u03b5\u03c0\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2<\/strong> \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac \u03c3\u03b5 \u03cc\u03bb\u03b7 \u03c4\u03b7 \u03c7\u03ce\u03c1\u03b1, \u03b4\u03b7\u03bb. <strong>\u03bc\u03cc\u03bd\u03bf \u03c4\u03bf 5% \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03af\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03c5\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03cd \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>At the territory level, the <strong>main instrument<\/strong> used by <strong>startuppers<\/strong> to establish a business is <strong>self-financing<\/strong>, while<strong>(external) financing<\/strong> is used by <strong>less<\/strong> than <strong>half of the startups<\/strong>. <strong>Central Macedonia, Crete and Western Greece<\/strong>, regions on which this analysis focuses, account for <strong>21% of registered startups<\/strong> in the country and almost <strong>monopolize manufacturing startups outside Attica<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The startup ecosystem is raising funding, growing and spreading across Greece.
