{"id":23215,"date":"2023-07-13T07:54:47","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T07:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/espa.io\/cooperation-on-the-circular-economy-in-athens\/"},"modified":"2023-07-13T07:54:47","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T07:54:47","slug":"cooperation-on-the-circular-economy-in-athens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/espa.io\/en\/cooperation-on-the-circular-economy-in-athens\/","title":{"rendered":"Cooperation on the circular economy in Athens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/espa.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/sunergasia-gia-tin-kukliki-oikonomia-stin-Athina-1024x614.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Memoranda of Understanding<\/strong> were signed between  <strong>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/ntua.gr\/el\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Technical University of Athens<\/a>\n<\/strong>(<strong>NTUA<\/strong>) and the Institute of Small and Medium Enterprises of the  <strong>GSEBEE<\/strong>, the Athens Chamber of Crafts, the Athens Chamber of  <strong>Tourism Development and Promotion Company of the Municipality of Athens<\/strong> (EATA S.A.), the  <strong>Association of Silversmiths of Athens<\/strong> and the  <strong>Commercial Association of Athens<\/strong>. The purpose of the  <strong>search for<\/strong> <strong>best<\/strong> <strong>practices<\/strong> related to the <strong>circular<\/strong> <strong>economy<\/strong> in quality of life. At the same time, the aim is to <strong>revitalise<\/strong> the <strong>centre of<\/strong> <strong>Athens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The action is implemented in the framework of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enicbcmed.eu\/projects\/innomed-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">INNOMED UP<\/a><\/strong> project:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Promoting UPcycling in Circular Economy through INNovation and education for creative industries in MEDiterranean cities, concerning creative professions and their interconnection with the circular economy, in the historic centre of Athens&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>At a relevant event held, in the context of which the memoranda of understanding were signed, it was noted that the <strong>general objective of this innovative project<\/strong> is:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>propose a strategy for the regeneration of Mediterranean cities<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>by exploiting the productive, creative networks and their interconnection with the modern and necessary practices of the circular economy<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In the context of the <strong>digital<\/strong> and <strong>green transition<\/strong>, cities are now facing an acute problem in terms of <strong>waste<\/strong> <strong>management<\/strong>. This calls for <strong>immediate<\/strong> and <strong>effective<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/espa.io\/en\/c\/enviornment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>actions<\/strong> <strong>management<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> <strong>\u03b1\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03bc\u03ac\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/strong><\/a> <strong>in particular<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>This Euro-Mediterranean project is funded by the EU and the <strong>ENI CBC MED<\/strong> programme. The <strong>budget<\/strong> amounts to  <strong>3.1 million. euro<\/strong>  (of which the  <strong>2.8 million. euros<\/strong>  is a <strong>European<\/strong> <strong>participation<\/strong>) and is being implemented in <strong>seven<\/strong> <strong>Mediterranean<\/strong> <strong>cities<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Athens<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the Prato<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Palermo in Sicily<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the city of Tunis in Tunisia<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hebron and Nablus in Palestine<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Irbid in Jordan<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Apart from the National Technical University of Athens, which is the coordinator of the project, also participating in the project are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>the consulting firm EPEM S.A.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the Municipalities of Prato and Tunis<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the university of Birzeit and<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the NGOs Future Pioneers (Jordan) and CRESM (Sicily)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-&#x3AD;&#x3BE;&#x3C5;&#x3C0;&#x3BD;&#x3BF;&#x3C5;&#x3C2;-&#x3BA;&#x3AC;&#x3B4;&#x3BF;&#x3C5;&#x3C2;-&#x3AD;&#x3C7;&#x3B5;&#x3B9;-&#x3C3;&#x3C7;&#x3B5;&#x3B4;&#x3B9;&#x3AC;&#x3C3;&#x3B5;&#x3B9;-&#x3BA;&#x3B1;&#x3B9;-&#x3BA;&#x3B1;&#x3C4;&#x3B1;&#x3C3;&#x3BA;&#x3B5;&#x3C5;&#x3AC;&#x3C3;&#x3B5;&#x3B9;-&#x3C4;&#x3BF;-&#x3B5;&#x3BC;&#x3C0;-&#x3B3;&#x3B9;&#x3B1;-&#x3C4;&#x3B7;&#x3BD;-&#x3BA;&#x3C5;&#x3BA;&#x3BB;&#x3B9;&#x3BA;&#x3AE;-&#x3BF;&#x3B9;&#x3BA;&#x3BF;&#x3BD;&#x3BF;&#x3BC;&#x3AF;&#x3B1;\"><strong>NTUA has designed and built smart bins for the Circular Economy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>It is noted in an announcement of the GSEVEE that the <strong>long-standing research engagement of the NTUA Research Group<\/strong>, which directs the project, with the Creative &amp; Culture Industries (CCIs) has highlighted the fact that in <strong>Mediterranean<\/strong> <strong>cities<\/strong> there are <strong>active<\/strong> and <strong>strong<\/strong> <strong>networks of<\/strong> <strong>small craft<\/strong>, <strong>craft<\/strong> and <strong>creative<\/strong> <strong>businesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the <strong>three years of implementation<\/strong>, the project has carried out <strong>numerous<\/strong> <strong>actions<\/strong> and has yielded significant results. But it aims to complete the key result. That is, the <strong>creation of<\/strong> <strong>pilot<\/strong> <strong>circular<\/strong> <strong>clusters<\/strong> in <strong>each<\/strong> <strong>participating<\/strong> <strong>city<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>In this direction, <strong>some of the Small and Medium-Sized Cultural Creative Enterprises<\/strong>, which cooperate in various ways, will <strong>host<\/strong> (or <strong>already host<\/strong>)<strong>the smart bins<\/strong>, designed and built by NTUA. They will collect secondary materials from productive activities such as:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>fabric and leather repellents<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>plastic<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>paper,<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>metal objects<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>The smart bins communicate via smart technology with the project&#8217;s online platform<\/strong>, which collects and shares information in an open way. A <strong>smart bike<\/strong> (also made by NTUA) is notified to  <strong>collects<\/strong> and  <strong>distributes<\/strong> the  <strong>materials<\/strong> in  <strong>professionals<\/strong>, who will  <strong>use<\/strong> for the  their <strong>own<\/strong>  <strong>constructions<\/strong>. Finally,  <strong>six small and medium-sized enterprises<\/strong> have  <strong>awarded<\/strong>, after a competitive public procedure, by the NTUA, with  <strong>amounts<\/strong> already  <strong>exploited<\/strong> for the  the <strong>production of<\/strong> <strong>innovative<\/strong> <strong>pilot<\/strong> <strong>products<\/strong>, the <strong>acquisition of circular economy equipment<\/strong> and training on issues related to the <strong>circular production<\/strong> and <strong>distribution of products<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Athens<strong>cluster<\/strong> network includes:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ten businesses that will host the smart bin<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the six companies that were rewarded and<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the five collaborating institutions, with which the NTUA has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and assist in the project activities and the communication
